Failed Your Driving Theory Test? What Happens Next.
Mar 01, 2026
If you have just failed your driving theory test, it is completely normal to feel fed up, frustrated and maybe a little embarrassed. Especially if you spent hours revising and only missed the pass mark by a few points.
But here is the good news. You can rebook quickly, improve quickly, and with the right approach, your next attempt can be your last.
You’re Not Alone. Most People Fail the Theory Test
Firstly, to provide some comfort, you’re certainly not alone! In fact, the majority of people taking a theory test fail!
According to official DVSA figures for 2024 to 2025, the driving theory test pass rate was just 44.9 percent. That means more than half of people taking the theory test failed.
Instead of seeing it as a disaster, think of it as a warm up. You now know what the test centre feels like. You know the format. You know how everything works. Now you can focus on passing on your next attempt.
But we’re sure the first question you have is…
How do I rebook your theory test?
If you’ve failed your theory test, the good news is that you can rebook your next theory test immediately using the online booking system. You’ll just have to wait 3 working days until you can go back to a test centre to take the test again. When you rebook via the DVSA website, this will automatically be managed by the booking system.
As an example, if you took your test on a Monday afternoon and sadly failed, you’d have to wait until at least Friday of the same week to reattempt the test. This means you won’t have to wait too long for your second attempt (subject to test centre availability).
However, before you rush to rebook the very next slot, it is worth pausing and asking yourself an important question…
Have I actually changed anything about how I am preparing?
Because booking again without improving your preparation is the fastest way to fail your theory test twice.
How many times can you fail the theory test?
There is no limit to how many times you can take the driving theory test.
There has even been a reported case in the UK of someone failing 157 times before finally passing
You probably do not want to aim for that record!
Each attempt costs £23. Each attempt takes time out of your day. And each failed attempt delays you from getting your driving licence and enjoying the freedom that comes with it.
So let’s focus on how to make sure your next test is your last one.
Why Do People Fail the Driving Theory Test?
When we speak to students who have failed their theory test, nerves are often blamed first.
And yes, nerves can play a part.
But in most cases, the real reason people fail the driving theory test is improper preparation.
Many learners spend hours doing practice questions. That sounds productive. But there is a big difference between practising questions and properly learning the content.
If you simply repeat mock tests and try to remember answers, you are not building understanding. You are just hoping the same questions appear again.
The better strategy is this.
First, learn the content properly. Then test yourself on it.
Understanding Your Theory Test Result
After your test, you will receive a results sheet showing whether you passed or failed, along with your scores.
You must pass both sections to pass the theory test overall.
Multiple Choice Section
You need 43 out of 50 to pass.
Your results will show which topic areas you answered incorrectly. This is extremely useful. It tells you exactly where you need to improve.
Hazard Perception Section
You need 44 out of 75 to pass.
Your results will show how many points you scored on each clip. If you scored low across several clips, it may be a timing issue rather than a knowledge issue.
How to Make Sure You Pass the Next Time
If you want to pass your driving theory test next time, here is a simple but effective plan.
- Review your result sheet and identify weak topics.
- Go back to the source material and properly learn those sections.
- Break your revision into small, focused sessions.
- Only move on to full mock tests once you consistently understand the topics.
- Practise hazard perception clips and focus on spotting developing hazards early.
Most importantly, avoid cramming the night before. Short, structured revision over several days is far more effective.
